Hazards in my place – Dăbuleni

Dăbuleni city is placed in the area of the sand dunes of the Danube valley, having as a  northern limit the southern part of  Ocolna Hill, situated at 11 km from the locality, this hill having the greatest altitude – 122 m – compared with the sand dunes that can be found on the territory of Dăbuleni locality.
This is the reason for which we use to say that sometimes  Dăbuleni is situated in the so-called  "Sahara of Oltenia".
Dăbuleni city is situated in Oltenia plain, in the southern – eastern part of Dolj county, at a  distance of 80 km from Craiova municipality, 45 km from Caracal municipality and 35 km from Corabia city.

The main risks of natural disasters from the localities are:

  • floods determined by the Danube river which can be found in the area;
  • the prolonged periods of drought and the very high temperatures with negative effects upon the thermal comfort degree and upon the agricultural cultures
  • the earthquakes determined by the tectonic plates from Vrancea area
  • the radiations.

 Dăbuleni locality is characterized by the excessive continental climate type.  This climate is generally characterized by hot summers, with average temperatures up to 22°-24° in July and cold winters, with average temperatures between -3° and 6° in January. This type of climate affects the thermal comfort index in the cold period and in the summer period.
In  Dăbuleni area, the wind is a very important climate element, because the wind frequency and power from here produce temperature decreases, determine the snow melting in the spring and especially the dryness and the sandblasting during the summer.
The drought is a very complex climatic phenomenon, being represented by a time period  mainly characterized by a big deficit of precipitations or by their lack. This fact determine a drastic temporary decrease of the water resources from rivers and lakes, as well as of the water reserves from the soil.

•the meteorological drought is an abnormally prolonged time period of dryness, determining a hydrological disequilibrium in the affected area;

•the agricultural drought is a time period without the precipitations that are necessary for the vegetation and the agricultural cultures, affecting their normal development ;

•the  hydrological drought represents a period when the water quantities from the rivers, lakes, underground water, water-yielding and soil are situated under the average values;

•the social and economical drought is defined as an association between the community requirements and the available water resources, on one side and the  elements of the hydrological, meteorological and agricultural drought, on the other side. In other words, the social and economical drought interferes when the water requirements for economy and other human activities exceeding the available water  resources from that period.

The Danube river constitutes the Southern border of Dăbuleni city, also being the most important  hydrological resource of the city. Moreover, Dăbuleni is a frontier city situated at the border with our Bulgarian neighbors. The river itself, as well as the marshes formed by flooding offer an important fishing potential but which has been lesser exploited in the last years.

The flooding danger for the Danube still exists, constituting an important risk  element for the people from Dăbuleni city, especially because there are some experiences in this sense.

The nuclear power plant from Koslodui represents a constant danger about which the  people talk  in this area.

At the north part of the Danube, the population from Dolj is worried. „What happens with the water where the radioactive waste materials have been stored?”, „How many deposits and what kind of radioactive deposits are there? ”, „What happen with the radioactive waste materials resulted from the activity?”, „How it would be better for the environment: with or without a reactor/ nuclear power plant”, „What are the negative effects of building a new reactor?”, „Why, now, the vegetables are drying during their vegetation period, after a raining period?”, are just some of the questions that people ask. We also talk about the increase of the cancer diseases also determined by this situation.

The school community can be threatened by the dangers mentioned before, for this reason being necessary to also practice some prevention activities, including in schools.
