HAZARDS IN MY PLACE

The Technological High School  ,, Petre Baniță ,,   Călărași is situated in the souther part of Dolj county, between the cities  Bechet and Dăbuleni. More exactly, it is situated on the road Bechet – Corabia, at 40  km from Corabia and at 72 km from Craiova. At 1 km, in the souther part, there is Sărata village which is a structure of our high school, being situated near the Danube river, at a distance of  8-10km. Concerning the disasters and the natural calamities that took place in our locality or that could affect in the future the population from the school we can talk about:

  • prolonged drought periods and very high temperatures with negative effects upon the  human comfort
  •  floods determined by the Danube river which is situated at a very small distance from our community
  •  earthquakes determined by the mountains from Vrancea area

In the souther part of Dolj county, at Dabuleni, Bechet and Desa, there are portions where the sand forms some dunes like in a desert. Also called Sahara from Oltenia area, this area from the southern part of Dolj county is slowly but surely transforming. The vegetation is disappearing, its place being taken by hot sand. The specialists use to say that a surface of about a hundred thousand of hectares are covered by sand. According to the specialists, the desertification phenomenon was bigger in the last years, especially because of the climate conditions and because of the lack of precipitations. Dolj is one of the counties which have been strongly affected by desertification, phenomenon which is determined by the drought and by the sandy soil and also by the chaotic deforestations from the last years. Nothing is raising any more.

400.000 hectares of the agricultural surface of Romania being affected by the phenomenon of desertification.

A half of this surface is in Oltenia . ,,The area has sandy lands, with high temperatures, with a lack of precipitations, the irrigation system being destroyed, so the conditions is accomplished”, as dr. Mihail Dumitru, the manager of the Research Institute for Pedology and Agricultural Chemistry has declared.

The drought  is a climatic hazard with a long installation period, being characterized by the decrease  of the precipitations under the average level, by decreasing the debit of the rivers and of the underground reserves of water which determine a big deficit of humidity in the air and in the soil, with direct effects upon the environment and firstly upon the agricultural cultures.

The drought from the summer of 2000 (coming back  in 2014), considered the most powerful from the last 100 years from our country, has affected  2,6 mill. hectares and it has produced some damages which have been evaluated to 6500 milliards lei.

The soil from our area looks like in the picture below, which is from the Danube meadow, the picture being taken after a prolonged  drought period.
