Iron Regiment of Toplica
The Second Infantry Regiment "Knjaz Mihajlo", known as the "Iron Regiment", was a regiment of the Serbian army during the wars of 1912-1918. The Iron Regiment was mobilized in Prokuplje during the war. The regiment was famous for its courage, toughness, high fighting morale, and with its heroism it amazed all the allied armies, including their military leaders, governments and people. The regiment started the war on October 7, 1912 from Prokuplje. It took part in all known battles, among which the battles of Cer and Kolubara were especially important. King Petar I Karadjordjevic presented a special recognition to the regiment for its courageous attitude during the withdrawal of the army through Albania. The regiment was the last to leave Serbian territory and move across Albania. The regiment did not receive the glorious name "Iron" from the king or the Serbian supreme command, but from the Serbian soldiers of the regiments themselves, due to their exceptional courage and great war exploits.
2018 marked the 100th anniversary of liberation in the Great War, when a monument to the Second Infantry Regiment was unveiled in Prokuplje. The names of all battles in which the Iron Regiment took part in both Balkan Wars and the First World War are engraved on the monument, and all the liberated cities in 1918 are listed. The names of the heroes of the Iron Regiment are also engraved on the marble plaques in the memorial park.
Composer Stanislav Binicki composed "March on the Drina" in honor of the second war commander of the regiment, Colonel Milivoje Stojanovic, who personally led the regiment to a new assault.
Serbian lyrics to the song were written many decades after Binički composed it, by poet and journalist Miloje Popović, in 1964 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Cer. English lyrics were added in 1964 by American songwriter Vaughn Horton for a recording by Patti Page under the title Drina (Little Soldier Boy). German lyrics were added by Walter Rothenburg in 1964 and Bert Olden in 1976. Italian lyrics were added in 1964 by Daniele Pace for the recording by Marie Laforêt. Milutin Popović Zahar added Serbian lyrics to a version entitled "Svirajte mi Marš na Drinu" in 1989.
